THE EXPRESSION OF EMOTIONS

The painter Laura Tosca and Gianpiero Dèlmati

Interview of the Deputy Director of “Communication and Forms Gianpiero Dèlmati to the painter Laura Tosca

Communication and Forms met Laura Tosca, painter, at the collective exhibition “Art is Now 2” The oratory pressure Passionis, Basilica S. Ambrogio in Milan (04-09 Dec. 2018). Laura was born in Milan, where it resides. Graduated with honors in painting from the Brera Academy, and with a second degree in political science, he told us about his passion for painting.

<< Laura, tell us about your experience related to “palette; we understand that your pictorial expression has gone through some steps: you started with the figurative: portraits, horses in particular, who have also rewarded you with well-deserved prizes. You later opted for a “passage” that led you to the abstract>>.

Sì , but there is an important step before arriving at the abstract, are five years of the Brera Nude School… because I've always painted, I have been passionate about portraits and particular situations since I was a child … I photographed, ad esempio, then reproduced a child intent on counting coins in Portobello … as well as girls who had fallen asleep on top of each other on the ferry. By reproducing these figures with a technique close to’ hyperrealism .

<< And the Nude School made in Brera?>> Brera was important, first of all because it is an academic training, and in the five years of attendance I was able to deepen anatomy and painting ‘ fast': the models changed positions the following day; all in acrylic. During this journey I continued with the figurative. Back then I was more than convinced of my work. At a certain point in my life I noticed that a certain desire for novelty and new experimentation had settled. I had probably run out of time for details and reproductions… I had a strong inner desire to want to express my emotions and feelings differently… so I started working painting without the figure, without drawing on a predefined image, but giving space to my emotions trying to depict what the feeling suggested to me.

<<And with what technique?>>

With metallic acrylic , since it is bright, and I wanted to keep the part of brightness that I have always sought in the experience of the figurative. I also experimented with the oxidation of color with copper and its structure… and then, I believe I have reached an initial balance by returning to oil, which is the classic subject of painting, but with a new technique together with a new expression not using brushes but spatulons or large wooden planks, in order to create a work composed with an original technique that suggests new emotions to me.

<< Laura, what pushed you to the palette?>>

The first word that comes to me is: need… as if I had to. I remember I was little – six / seven years- and with a pencil I painted my grandfather's portrait, and also to a child playmate ( I still keep the latter)… I would have liked to do the art school in function of this inner thrust and deep-rooted need to draw…

<<You could verbally paint this need ?>>

This need, this drive is part of my personality… just as a musician is attracted to music, the painter or artist is attracted to the composition of color, from using your hands, the head and the soul to draw, to observe and to confront oneself.
